Coffee in hand, I started my morning by clicking the online button towards a news channel. I note the specific channel is not important as they are all pretty much the same.
It was full of negative news. Most of the content was about the political situation in Washington. And I really do not care which side of the fence you come down on, it’s the wrong side from the point of view of other viewers.
I then clicked through to my social media channel on Facebook. Now that was an experience that deserved more than a single cup of coffee!
The news feed was full of negative stories from one side of the American political spectrum or the other. If it wasn’t about politics, it was about an environmental degradation story, or some other outrage in the world.
I do note however, there were a few graphic memes being distributed by one company or another looking to collect likes as if they had some value in the real world.
I note checking the news and social media first thing in the morning is a mistake. Those channels are however, as addictive as hell.
But starting tomorrow, I will not start my day with news and social media sphere.
The objective now is to avoid all of that crap for as long as possible.
Update: Feb 2021 Not doing the doomscrolling was a major hurdle to overcome. I’m happy to say I no longer start my morning this way but sad to say I am still randomly succumbing later in the day.
